The Resource Center’s Creations art program presents “Tropical Inspirations," an art exhibit featuring painting by artists with disabilities. The exhibit will run from Fri., Jan. 20, through Fri., Feb. 24, at the Patterson Library Octagon Gallery located at 40 South Portage Street in Westfield. The weeklong event will coincide with their no joining fee promotion for the month of January where individuals can save up to $75 on the cost of a membership until January 31. Come visit the Institute between Jan. 10 and Apr. 7 and leave better informed about our local universe, questions to ponder, and your sense of wonder renewed; just the antidote for the midwinter and "mud season" blahs. “Hugo,” the Golden Globe-winning tale of a young orphan who lives inside the walls of a train station, is the next featured film at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House. It will be screened on Sat., Jan. 28, at 8 p.m. and Tues., Jan. 31, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Opera House Cinema Series. Rated PG for mild thematic material, some action/peril and smoking, “Hugo” runs 126 minutes. Tickets available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors and Opera House members) and $5 (students and children) the night of each screening. SUNY Fredonia will host a local celebration of the 26th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day on January 28. The event is being held in conjunction with the Blue Devils women’s and men’s SUNYAC basketball home games against SUNY New Paltz. The women will tip-off at 2 p.m. in Steele Hall, followed by the men at 4 p.m. The event is free to SUNY Fredonia students and guests who are 16 and younger. Attendees 17 and older will be charged $3. The first 125 guests 16 and under will receive free T-shirts. Sat., Jan. 28 from 10:30-11:30 am. Local author, teacher, and contributor to the Observer, Vicki Diane Westling will hold a very special story time at the Dunkirk Free Library. Ms. Westling will read “If I Were a Mouse, I’d Live in this House," written by her sister Annette Asbill and answer any questions about the children’s books she herself has written. JAMESTOWN, NY -- Jill Keating and Robert Plyler will star in a benefit production of the play “Love Letters,” by A.R. Gurney, at 6 p.m., on Saturday, January 28 at the Robert H. Jackson Center. The Center is located at 305 East Fourth Street in Jamestown, New York. Presenting the event is the Chautauqua New York Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL), the local affiliate of a national organization whose goal is to recognize and promote promising young talent. All proceeds from the performance will support scholarships given by the Chautauqua New York Chapter of NSAL.

On Dec. 8, 2011, Lori Bartlett and her family of Jamestown had a house fire and lost everything they owned. Friends and loved ones will be holding a benefit on Sun., Jan. 29, 2012 at the Eagles Club, 329 E 4th St. in Jamestown from 2-8pm. Spaghetti Dinner, Live music, A Chinese auction, 50/50 tickets, raffles and door prizes will be featured at our benefit. There is no charge to get in the door. We are only asking for a $5.00 donation for an adult dinner ticket and $3.00 for child’s ticket (10 and under). The Panama Volunteer Fire Department along with neighboring Volunteer Fire Departments and community members are holding a benefit for two of Panama's Firefighters. The benefit is on Sun. Jan. 29, 2012 at the Lakewood Legion from 1-7pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. On Groundhog Day, Thur., Feb. 2, from 10 am to noon, the Audubon Center and Sanctuary’s Senior Naturalist Jeff Tome will lead a cross country ski of the grounds, looking for signs of animals, winter spiders, and groundhog shadows. A limited number of skis are available to be borrowed for the morning program. Cost is $10 for members, $12 for non-members, $5 for children 12 and under. Fee includes coffee/tea after the ski and perhaps skis if you don’t have your own. The 15th Annual Gowanda Area Sports Banquet will be held at the Slovenian Club on Saturday, February 4 beginning at 6 pm. The event will include a buffet dinner, door prizes, Chinese auction and a local sports memorabilia display.
