A day of winter-themed equestrian events is scheduled for this Sunday at Chautauqua Institution.
Horses of all divisions will compete in friendly competition including pleasure driving, obstacles, Currier & Ives, timed trotting, and drive and ride. Classes begin at 11 a.m. in the parking lot adjacent to the Welcome Center on Route 394.
Other events include a "Currier & Ives" parade through the grounds of historic Chautauqua Institution at 1 p.m. , and bobsled rides by the Stateline Draft Horse Club are from 1- 3 p.m.
Carol Lorenc, event organizer and rally secretary, said the sleigh rally was re-positioned to the three day Martin Luther King weekend to be featured along with numerous other local winter festivities. The Doors Open Jamestown event will take place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features free admission to eight attractions.
"Bare the Barrels" takes place Saturday, Sunday, and Monday at over 21 wineries and includes great discounts on wines and free tastings.
A mardi gras party at Zebro's Harbor House in Barcelona on both Saturday and Sunday will include New Orleans favorites. Sleigh Rally exhibitors and spectators are invited to the post-rally party on Sunday.
Ms. Lawrence said the Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau has publicized the event in the American Road Magazine Calendar and Lamar Advertising has donated three billboards to alert the community that the sleigh rally is early this year
"We are thrilled that Nationwide Insurance has become the major corporate sponsor," said Ms. Lawrence. She added that the Mayville-Westfield Chamber of Commerce has been very supportive and that the event couldn't happen "without a tremendous amount of work from Chautauqua Institution."
The Nationwide Currier and Ives Sleigh Rally is supported by the Lou Eibl Corral, a club of horse people from all over Western New York including Cherry Creek, and the Cattaraugus–Chautauqua County Chapter of the New York State Horse Council. Proceeds will benefit development of the horse trail.
