Fredonia Skates Past Morrisville For Pink The Rink

FREDONIA, N.Y. — Fredonia State rolled to its fourth straight win and celebrated Pink The Rink VI with a 5-2 SUNYAC victory over the Morrisville Mustangs.

Five different players had goals and sophomore goaltender Mark Friesen made 22 saves as the Blue Devils improved to 5-3-3 in the SUNYAC. They are 10-6-3 overall.

Senior forward Bryan Ross had a goal and an assist to move into a tie for sixth on Fredonia State's all-time career scoring list.

Clad in their traditional pink jerseys and socks, the Blue Devils spotted the Mustangs a 1-0 first-period lead before roaring back with three unanswered goals in the the second period. Junior forward Will McLaughlin scored first when he converted at 3-on-2 rush by chipping the puck over the shoulder of Morrisville goaltender Christopher Azzano at 2:11 of the second period.

It was McLaughlin's third goal of the season.

Freshman forward Brian Doust put the Blue Devils ahead to stay with a power-play goal off a rebound at 12:17, and sophomore forward Alex Perkins scored eight seconds into another Morrisville penalty with a shot from the right circle into the open side at 18:51.

Doust's goal was his fifth this season, while Perkins scored for the fourth time.

Curtis Renaud injected life back into the Mustangs (2-8-1 SUNYAC, 3-15-1 overall) when he scored off a faceoff at 6:33 of the third period. It was Renaud's second goal of the game and his seventh of the season.

The Blue Devils countered quickly when Ross, on a breakaway, lit the lamp 10th time this season. It was his 31st point of the season and the 129th of his collegiate career, which ties Brad Preston for sixth on the all-time list.

Preston played for the Blue Devils in the mid-1990s.

Junior forward Ben Waldman completed the scoring with an empty-net goal at with 59.9 seconds remaining. It was his second goal of the season.

The Blue Devils have off until next Friday when they visit No. 3 ranked Plattsburgh.

The event, held annually to promote cancer awareness, raised approximately $10,000 for the American Cancer Society. Included in the proceeds was the sale of the Blue Devils' pink jerseys.
