"The most American thing in America." So said Theodore Roosevelt of Chautauqua, a gated community in southwestern New York State. Chautauqua is an indian name -- a last remnant of the native peoples who once lived their fragile lives here. The audiotrack from the YouTube selections: shagrugge, "Sprechen sie Sanibel" is intended as a subtext for the early and still unamed people who left burial mounds, for the Erie tribe which is vanished, and for the Seneca people whose title to seventeen thousand nine hundred and twenty-seven acres was removed by treaty with the U.S. in 1823. Still photographs of sites include The Atheneum (1881), the Miller Bell Tower, lake scenes, and environs.
